What's on show
Lewisham Shopping visitors will be able to explore recreations of Windrush passenger landing cards, representing each person who arrived on the MV Empire Windrush at Tilbury docks on 22nd June 1948 and gave a London address as their proposed place to stay.
The exhibition, concurrently shown at City Hall, displays 341 individual landing cards, showing pivotal moments in the lives of each passenger; a snapshot of hope, opportunity and uncertainty.
The reimagined landing cards, recreated by Goldsmiths, University of London historian Dr John Price and Public Engagement Manager Will Cenci, as the original Windrush landing cards destroyed by the Home Office in 2010, make visible an intriguing historical record of the pioneers who arrived in the UK on this seminal journey.
Paul Redden, General Manager of Lewisham Shopping, says: “We are thrilled to be able to show a snapshot of this historic moment and hope the exhibition will illuminate and challenge assumptions made about those who arrived on the Empire Windrush more than 70 years ago.”
Visitors to the exhibition are invited to share their own or their family’s stories of arrival by writing on mock landing cards, which will be displayed in the space and can be dropped off at the exhibition's own post box.
